Our History
SM was born in Vitoria, Spain in 1937, when a group of Marianist teachers began printing their notes and teaching manuals. Since then, we have continued to work in constant adaptation to change with a vocation for cultural and educational service. Today we are one of the leading educational companies in Ibero-America. In Puerto Rico, from our offices in Cataño, we contribute to the education of our children and youth.
At SM, we educate for the common good, to achieve a better world. Our clear educational project seeks to develop a student with values and the sensitivity to be a global citizen. And it is in school where we learn to relate to one another, to take care of ourselves, others, and our environment. This is one of the most essential forms of learning.
SM belongs to the SM Foundation, a non-profit educational institution that maintains its important social work in Ibero-America through educational programs that contribute to a more inclusive, just, peaceful, and sustainable world. We stand out for developing editorial products and educational solutions that support the role of teachers and the school.
In the cultural sphere, we are committed to children's and young adult literature of high literary quality and a playful approach, which encourages a love for reading and transmits human, social, and cultural values that contribute to promoting the common good and care.

SM Puerto Rico
The SM Puerto Rico headquarters was established in 2004. We offer educational, cultural, and training services with a wide reach in Ibero-America and over 80 years of experience in two integrated areas of action: editorial work involving the creation of content in print and digital formats, educational services, publications, and children's and young adult literature with a diverse range of print and/or digital titles in our catalog; and social work that channels the profits of the editorial group into educational research, training for teachers, families, and educational leaders, the promotion of reading and writing, among other socio-educational projects—all aimed at bringing teaching and culture to the most disadvantaged sectors of society. We publish our children's and young adult literature (CYAL) titles under the Ediciones SM label. We are, above all, a cultural project that revolves around our SM Foundation.

We live our identity and mission according to values that build our culture and our business vision. We are an education company at the service of the common good—a collective of professionals co-responsible for the success of a business project that matters to us and moves us.
A project in which the following take priority:
Closeness to the school as a substantial part of our being and our history.
Openness to change, flexibility, and adaptation as a trait that guarantees a permanent contribution of value.
Audacity as a necessary element of evolution.

SM Foundation

We are a non-profit educational entity working for the improvement of education and culture in the countries where we are present: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Spain, Mexico, Peru, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.
The SM Foundation was created in 1977 in Spain with the objective of allocating the economic profits obtained by the SM company to improve the quality of education. In Puerto Rico, since 2004, we have developed socio-educational initiatives and programs for children, youth, and adults in highly vulnerable sectors, based on criteria of equity, closeness, and quality.
We work to promote reading and writing in schools, study centers, children's homes, libraries, and communities. We support teaching work through training workshops, research, and international and national seminars. We disseminate the work of national authors, fostering encounters of growth and learning around reading between them and the student body.
For the past 10 years, we have offered a Reading Promoters Course, a completely free theoretical-practical training for participants, aimed at contributing to the training of adults (teachers, librarians, educational and community leaders, university students, cultural managers, writers, workshop leaders, educational professionals, mothers and fathers, general public) as motivating agents for reading in their particular environments.
Among the communities and organizations with which we collaborate are: Villas del Sol and Centro ACUTAS in Toa Baja, Centro Educativo Joaquina de Vedruna in Río Piedras, Centro Inés in San Juan, Proyecto Escuela Nacer in Bayamón, Centro de Acogida y Sostén Agustino (CASA) in Aguas Buenas, Casa Educativa in Cantera, United Way of Puerto Rico, and countless homes, tutoring centers, and public and private schools in Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico in my heart
Puerto Rico en mi Corazón (Puerto Rico in my Heart) is the name of a collection of short stories by Puerto Rican authors aimed at motivating a love for reading in children. These narratives focus their attention on connecting children with the space where they live, Puerto Rico, and the importance of caring for the nature, flora, and fauna that surround us.

For our teachers
For our teachers, we create initiatives every year on Teacher's Day. Thank you for making a difference and impacting the lives of many students.
